Munnar sits about 130 km east of Kochi, up in the Western Ghats. The drive is one of Kerala’s prettiest — here’s how to plan it.

Kochi to Munnar distance & drive time

The distance is roughly 130 km and takes about 4 hours by road, depending on traffic out of Kochi and stops on the way. It’s a steady climb from sea level into the hills, so the second half is winding — factor in a relaxed pace rather than a race.

The route and best stops

The usual route runs Kochi → Muvattupuzha → Kothamangalam → Adimali → Munnar. The highlights on the way up are the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls, the Karadippara viewpoint, and the first tea slopes as you near Munnar. Pull over — these stops are half the reason to drive rather than fly-and-transfer.

How to travel from Kochi to Munnar

Private car (easiest): door-to-door from Kochi airport, station or hotel, with the freedom to stop at the waterfalls and viewpoints. Taxi: similar, usually one-way. Bus: KSRTC and private buses run from Ernakulam but are slower and skip the scenic stops. For most travellers a private car — as part of a Munnar package — is the comfortable choice.

Doing it as a tour

Our Munnar package builds the Kochi–Munnar leg into a private-car itinerary with the stops planned in, hotels in your category and a return leg to Kochi or onward to Thekkady, Alleppey or Kumarakom.
