Kerala is compact and varied — hills, spice country, backwaters and coast are all within short, scenic drives. Here’s how to put a trip together so the route flows and nothing feels rushed.
The regions, and the classic route
Most Kerala trips string together four things, roughly west to east and back to the coast: old Kochi (Fort Kochi, Chinese nets), the Munnar tea hills, Thekkady spice-and-wildlife country, and the Alleppey / Kumarakom backwaters, sometimes finishing on a Kovalam or Marari beach. The classic order is Kochi → Munnar → Thekkady → Alleppey → (Kovalam) — it climbs into the hills, comes down through the spice country, and unwinds on the water.
How many days do you need?
3 days: pick one focus — Munnar, or Kochi plus a backwater night. 5 days: the sweet spot — Munnar, Thekkady and an Alleppey houseboat. 7 days: add the coast (Kovalam) and a slower pace, or fold in Kumarakom or Wayanad. Two weeks lets you add the far south or the north (Wayanad, Bekal).
The best time to visit
September to March is the popular window — pleasant and green after the monsoon. The monsoon (June–September) is lush, atmospheric and cheaper, and is the traditional Ayurveda season. April–May is warm but fine for the hills.
How to get around
By far the easiest way is a private car with a driver — the distances are short but the roads are winding, and a car lets you stop at waterfalls and viewpoints and move on your own schedule. That’s how our packages work; tell us your days and we’ll build the route.
