Munnar — the tea-carpeted hill station of the Western Ghats — is the first stop on most Kerala itineraries, and for good reason. Here’s how to plan it so you see the best of it without rushing.
How many days do you need in Munnar?
Two nights and three days is the sweet spot. Day one is the scenic drive up from Kochi; day two is a full day of sightseeing across the tea country; day three is a relaxed morning before you move on. If Munnar is your whole trip, 2N/3D is enough. If it’s part of a bigger Kerala tour, keep Munnar to two nights and add Alleppey or Thekkady.
A day-by-day Munnar sightseeing plan
Day 1 — Kochi to Munnar. The 130 km drive climbs through the ghats past the Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls and endless tea slopes. Arrive by afternoon and settle in among the plantations.
Day 2 — the tea country. Mattupetty Dam, Echo Point, Kundala Lake, the Tea Museum, and Eravikulam National Park at Rajamalai to spot the Nilgiri tahr. Add a spice-garden or plantation walk if you have time.
Day 3 — onward. Head back to Kochi, or continue to Thekkady, Alleppey or Kumarakom to combine hills with backwaters.
The best time to visit Munnar
September to March is ideal — cool, clear and green after the monsoon. April–May is warm but popular. The monsoon (June–August) turns Munnar lush and misty with lower rates and fewer crowds, if you don’t mind the rain. The Neelakurinji, which blooms once every twelve years, is a rare bonus.
How to reach Munnar
The nearest airport and railway station are in Kochi, about 130 km (4 hours) away. The easiest way is a private car from Kochi — no changes, and you can stop at the viewpoints and waterfalls on the way up. That’s exactly how our Munnar package works.
